Andrea J. Fulton, (Playwright & Producer), a graduate of Northwestern University, is also a songwriter and member of the League of Professional Theatre Women. THE PRIOR 55 is the eighth play she has penned of a body of work performed nationally and recognized internationally. Her work has been honored with six AUDELCO award nominations and two award wins for excellence in Black Theatre. She received a New York Council on Suicide “I AM HOPE” Award, Thomas Barbour Playwright’s Award including a cash prize, a New York Fund for Eldercare Grant, NYC Cultural Affairs Artist Corp Grant and two Anthem Awards, setting her among world-class change-makers. She created the Fulton Arts Foundation to support adults pursuing the performing arts later in life, impacting those on stage, behind the scenes and in the audience. A critic once wrote she “has an uncanny knack for giving us an incisive vision of difficult social issues. She understands people and her plays give us hope for change.” She enjoys making a difference and continues a life-long pattern of giving of her time and resources to enrich individuals. She hopes her passion for the arts and her love for people will inspire and endure.
The ABC Fulton Org, aka Fulton Arts Foundation was founded by Andrea J. Fulton as a non-profit organization as a result of her desire to fill gaps in the performing arts world. She had experienced many extraordinarily talented African American and older actors being overlooked, while younger and less culturally diverse roles were routinely being filled.
As an African American woman, Ms. Fulton knew what it felt like to be marginalized and under-estimated. Growing up the youngest in her family, she was surrounded by older role models. As she matured and developed an interest in theatre, Ms. Fulton realized older folks can often be the most committed, selfless, and hard working performers. The lack of opportunities out there for talented older people of all nationalities made Ms. Fulton determined to provide opportunities that would nurture these under-utilized and under-valued groups.
Ms. Fulton wanted to make a difference so that people in the audience could see more representation on stage. She knew the world of theatre should and could be broader and more encompassing much like the world we live in.
This organization has since endeavored to make a difference on stage and with the audience and is doing so.
